The changes in 1Password items sharing method

12 October, 20211 min read227 words

1Password recently updated its years-old method of password sharing by shifting from peer-to-peer sharing through a URL scheme format to offering a standalone link page1. This change aims to improve the experience for users who don't use 1Password yet.

We are trying to pinpoint the specific version in which these changes occurred.

#What changed?

For a prolonged period, 1Password has employed a peer-to-peer password sharing method, wherein sharing would generate a URL scheme in the format of onepassword://share/1?d=<base64URL> to send to others. However, this required that the recipient also use 1Password to import and view the password.

Now, a sharing link https://share.1password.com/s#<token> can be generated, allowing others who don't use 1Password to also view the password as well.

#How has it evolved?

After meticulously examining each iOS APP version throughout the transition period, here are the detailed findings:

The first iOS version of 1Password 8 released was v8.9.0
